As a freelance writer, most of my paying work comes as a reporter or critic for print, radio, and the web. I began my journalistic career writing about music, but have since broadened my coverage to art and design; I also write about politics and the environment. But I've also published two Internet books; edited three travel guides; penned magazine columns on topics from golf to technology; given presentations at design and music conferences; and appeared on many panels.

Recently I contributed essays to Allworth's The Education of a Comics Artist: Visual Narrative in Cartoons, Graphic Novels, and Beyond and Education of a Graphic Designer (Second Edition) and wrote an introduction to a volume of Shag's art for Chronicle Books.

As a reporter, I've been nominated for a Music Journalism Award and, most recently, a RTNDA Award. And Print, where I'm a contributing editor, won the National Magazine Award for general excellence in 2002 and 2005.

The following is a partial list of publications I've written for:

Wired
HotWired
Entertainment Weekly
NPR's All Things Considered
KQED Public Radio's The California Report
Magnet
San Francisco Chronicle
San Francisco Bay Guardian
Artweek
SF Weekly
SF Gate
